When I was very little, my Father owned a bar. Since my parents had no one to babysit for me I was always stuck there.

As soon as my Mother and I would walk in the door she'd say;
don't shoot the Boys, (referring to the young local guys sitting at the bar), with your water gun. But I Did Anyhow.

The guys used to scream; Oh No, Here Comes The Holy Terror!

Financial Aid Grants Are Free. No Repayment Ever!
You don't have to be a genius or have had great marks in high school to get into college nowadays. They may just make you take a couple of easy tests to see what Freshman classes are good for you. No academic requirements for financial aid.

Then there's Work Study. An easy job at minimum wage.

Federal Work-Study

What is work-study?

Anyone can go to college. You don't have to be in or just out of high school. I was 28 when I started college.
I went to school with people who worked full time and still got straight A's. Better grades than I.

Call the Financial Aid Department of the college or university you want to attend and ask them any questions you have, or for an interview there for help getting the financial aid application completed.

I know a person can go to college with just financial aid. I did.

If you get really good marks as an undergraduate, there are a lot of good internships and scholarships. to pay for post graduate work.

Try never to take student loans.
It's better to go to a Good school that may not have such a big name, than to go into debt for ten years.

Some students may be able to get help paying off student loans; for certain professions like becoming teachers, doctors, etc. if you are willing to work in under served areas for a number of years.
Americorps Offers Some Financial Help For Students Too.
AmeriCorps

Student loans are good, if one is sure they can pay them off. Otherwise they're trouble.

Some of the smallest schools have the best teachers. Know what you want to learn and choose a school by how compatible they are with your goals.

America Can Be The Promised Land!
Take advantage of our Free Educational System.
You could learn a lot.

College is Free in America. Grants alone will pay the cost of many very good colleges. And the student should have over $700 left a semester, after tuition and books. Probably more nowadays, depends on financial income family size, etc.

Pass the DREAM Act!
Those who were brought here at a young age should have a chance to earn their citizenship and give back to the country they call home.
It’s Time To Stop Delaying And Pass The DREAM Act!

NO tar sands! Mountaintop Removal, Strip And Longwall Mining, Gas Fracking,

For My Father Sam Atkins [Updated 3/21/12]

My Father was a young man during "The Jazz Age", Roaring Twenties. And he sure could dance, sing and roar! He was a Leo after all, born in August.

Jumpin Jive

Cab Calloway And Bill Robinson My Father's Best Friends From
The Cotton Club NYC.

Don't try this at home.

My Father was born on Grand Street in New York City (Manhattan) 1893.

His Mother; Sarah, (my Grandmother), was a Orthodox Rabbi's Daughter. She and her family immigrated, from Latvia to Nre Yotk City about 1880.

His Father (my Grandfather), came all the way from Russia as a young man; all by himself, (he had a brother already living in Connecticut). Around the 1880's too.

I know he, (Nathan) and my Grandmother were married before 1888. Because he always said my Father's older Sister Florence, was born during the Blizzard of 88'!

They moved to Bayonne NJ; (where some of my Grandmother's relatives lived), when my Father was about 7 years old.

For My Father *Sam Atkins* Who Taught Me To Love Music And Always Said Better Late Than Never!

The guy in the picture isn't my Father. It's my cousin Sam Hock. He played the kazoo.

The woman at the bar is my Mother Mary (Jean, her nickname).

The following poem appeared on the editorial page of the Daily Princetonian. April, 1949

BALLAD OF THE BEER
Sammy's New York bar and grill
Is selling nickel beer.
Hurrah for Sammy, swill your fill.
And move your bar down here.
Sammy cut his price way down
The five-cent glass of cheer.
Oh leave that there ungrateful town,
Please move your bar down here.
Sammy, Sammy, save the day,
Our throats are growing sore,
Those G. I. checks are a month away,
So bring that bar down here.
Sammy, also bring your bock,
The other boys may sneer,
But we'll not buy their watered stock,
If you move your bar down here.
Sammy Atkins, you're our man,
You've nothing bad to fear.
We'll disregard the picket ban,
When you move your bar down here.
Sam, you know, a five-cent glass
has never had a peer;
The price will take the place of class.
Come on, move your bar down here.

The Adopt A Bubbe Or Zayde Program provides food, medicine, bed linens, clothing, eyeglasses, hearing aids, utility payments, and other items for those unable to exist on their pensions.

Since the break up of the Soviet Union in 1991 with the resulting hyperinflation, pensions have become almost worthless. At the same time, food, clothing, medicine and apartments are no longer subsidized by the government, and the prices for these have risen beyond the reach of most pensioners.

Sovereign States And Dependent Territories In Africa

Uganda
In recent years peace has been seemingly within reach, largely due to the Juba Peace Talks. From June 2006 to March 2008 in Juba, Sudan, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and the Government of Uganda (GoU) engaged in a series of peace talks in order to end the conflict. These peace talks, supported by special envoys from the United States and other nations, allowed for the longest period of peace in northern Uganda’s 23-year war.

The Juba Peace Talks developed with hope for a lasting resolution, and concluded in March of 2008 with the Final Peace Agreement (FPA) ready for the signature of Joseph Kony and President Museveni. However, in April of 2008, Kony twice failed to appear and sign the FPA and officially ended the Juba talks mediated by the Southern Sudanese government. Joseph Kony’s stated reasons for not signing the FPA were a vague understanding of the treaty’s systems regarding post-conflict justice and an apprehension toward ICC warrants for him and four other LRA leaders. Since the collapse of the peace talks, the LRA has been active in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Central African Republic (CAR) and southern Sudan, drawing widespread disapproval from the international community and igniting a new urgency to end what has become a complex regional conflict.

In the last two years, an estimated 900,000 of the 1.8 million displaced have returned to their homes. But that leaves one million people currently living in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. While the majority desires to return home, the issues surrounding their return are complex. Some have been displaced for more than a decade, and their former way of life is all but gone. Access to clean water, economic opportunities, health centers, and education are a pressing concern for all, and even more so for the many who contemplate returning to resource-barren villages.

The Rolling Chairs In Atlantic City, NJ ☆In Honor Of Black History Month☆

Real African American Heroes

Atlantic City's First Rolling Chairs

My Parents and I, used to go to Atlantic City all the time when I was young, (1950's and 60's). I had Cousins who lived there.

My Cousin Roy and I used to ride on the rolling chairs together every time I visited. (The more modern ones that Roy and I used to ride on were open in the front and on the sides).

Roy was one of the nicest young people I've ever met. He was grown up when he was 11. Roy didn't fight with a girl the way most boys did.

Everyone on the boardwalk knew and loved, my Cousin Roy, he used to run errands for them all.

We had such a good time on the rolling chairs and I remember the middle aged African American Men who used to push them from one end of the Boardwalk to the other! African-American Workers Crucial To Atlantic City's Rise by Kathleen O'Brien/The Star-Ledger February 24 2012

The Atlantic City Boardwalk was so beautiful back then! I remember the Steel Pier And Salt Water Taffy. The Planters Peanut Store, Mr. Peanut walking around, The pigeons who would eat peanuts out of your hand, Ripley's little museum on the Steel Pier, The Diving Horse, cotton candy, candy apples, The salt water taffy store and so much more. But riding on the rolling chairs with my Cousin Roy was the best!

These are my memories of Atlantic City.
